Genome-wide mapping of signatures of selection using a high-density array identified candidate genes for growth traits and local adaptation in chicke…

2023

Abstract Background Availability of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping arrays and progress in statistical analyses have allowed the identification of genomic regions and genes under selection in chicken. In this study, SNP data from the 600 K Affymetrix chicken array were used to detect signatures of selection in 23 local Italian chicken populations. The populations were categorized into four groups for comparative analysis based on live weight (heavy vs light) and geographical area (Northern vs Southern Italy). Putative signatures of selection were investigated by combining three extended haplotype homozygosity (EHH) statistical approaches to quantify excess of haplotype homoz…

Genomic inbreeding estimation in small populations: evaluation of runs of homozygosity in local cattle breeds

2015

The availability of high throughput genotyping has facilitated the quantification of inbreeding by genomic markers in farm animals. Run of homozygosity (ROH) are contiguous lengths of homozygous genotypes and represent an estimate of the degree of autozygosity at genome-wide level. The current study aims to quantify the genomic inbreeding derived from ROH (FROH) in three Italian local cattle breeds. Individuals of Cinisara (71), Modicana (72), Reggiana (168) were genotyped with the 50K v2 Illumina BeadChip. Genotypes from 96 animals of the Italian Holstein cattle breed were included in the analysis. The following criteria were used to define a ROH: two missing SNPs; one heterozygous SNP; mi…

Cytogenetical test to predict the vigour potential in Brassica seeds under long-term storage.

2013

Preservation of intraspecific diversity in seed banks is a common strategy to frontier the loss of biodi- versity, however long-term storage inevitably results in the loss of a certain percentage of seeds, there- fore causing the genetic erosion of a seed collection. For this reason seed quality monitoring is of out- standing importance to ensure that the regenerated genetic material is representative of the endemic nat- ural diversity once reintroduced in the environment, as well as to preserve the genetic biodiversity of species economically relevant for modern agriculture. Ageing amplification tests, in which seeds under- go osmotic stresses, enable to detect little differences in the vi…

Nonstandard variational calculus with applications to classical mechanics. 2. The inverse problem and more

1999

In this paper we continue analyzing the possible applications of nonstandard analysis to variational problems, with particular interest in classical mechanics. In particular, we adapt various techniques of numerical analysis to solve the nonstandard version of the Euler-Lagrange equation for both one-and multidimensional systems. We also start an introductory analysis of the inverse problem of the calculus of variation, identifying a class of nonstandard difference equations for which a first-order Lagrangian can be obtained.

An operatorial approach to stock markets

2009

We propose and discuss some toy models of stock markets using the same operatorial approach adopted in quantum mechanics. Our models are suggested by the discrete nature of the number of shares and of the cash which are exchanged in a real market, and by the existence of conserved quantities, like the total number of shares or some linear combination of cash and shares. The same framework as the one used in the description of a gas of interacting bosons is adopted.

Data from: Mechanisms of reciprocity and diversity in social networks: a modelling and comparative approach

2018

Three mechanisms have been proposed to underlie reciprocation of social behaviors in gregarious animals: ‘calculated reciprocity’, ‘emotional bookkeeping’ and ‘symmetry-based reciprocity’. Among these explanations, emotional book-keeping has received the broadest support from experimental and observational studies. On the other hand, three individual-based models have shown that reciprocation may emerge via ‘symmetry-based reciprocity’, ‘emotional bookkeeping’, or a combination of both mechanisms. Here we use these three models to assess their relative fit with empirical data on reciprocation and social network structure across different groups and species of macaques. We collected grooming…
